If you’re like everyone else you’ll be excited about Google’s announcement of a new keyword selection tool for AdWords. But, is the new tool any good?

For once, everybody can trial Google’s new keyword tool rather than just a select few. To take part in the trial, log into your AdWords account and click on the “Opportunities” tab.

Scroll down the left side of your browser and find the “Tools” box. Within the box click on the “Keyword Tool” link to show the existing keyword selection tool. At the top of the page will be a link inviting you to “take a look at the new keyword tool”. Click on this link to start your trial.

The first change you’re likely to notice is the “categories” tree.

This tree lists major niches like “finance”, “home & kitchenware” and “food”. Clicking on the “+” symbol to the left of a category shows sub-niches within the main niche.

Select the niche that describes your business and Google will reveal a long list of keywords to choose from and use in your AdWords campaign.

With your keyword suggestions, you get the familiar information we’re all used to like competition levels, estimated costs, local & global search volumes.

New features include a trend graph that shows a keywords popularity over time. You can now tell if your keywords popularity is long term, seasonal or just a flash in the pan.

If you feel the need for more information about your keywords, additional columns can be added to the standard layout to reveal even more statistics. These include estimates on a keywords click-through-rate, ad position, impressions and cost. These should all be very familiar stats to regular users of Google’s Traffic Estimator tool.

Not quite as obvious, but definitely as useful as the “categories” feature is the “Advanced Options” link. Clicking on this link reveals constraints you can place on your keyword statistics to get an even more realistic view of the performance you can expect from them.

One very useful feature is that you can now restrict your results by geographical location and language. You can also investigate the effect that different ‘max cpc’ and ‘daily budget’ limits will have on your keywords performance.

Another very interesting new feature is the ability to filter your results based on criteria that you define. For example, you could have the tool show you those keywords that obtain a top 3 position for your budget constraints or just show keywords that have more than 1000 impressions in a month.

The new AdWords Keyword Selection Tool certainly provides AdWords advertisers with a very comprehensive view of how your keywords might perform. And I’m sure the seasoned AdWords expert will get hours of enjoyment looking at potential keywords for their campaign from every angle imaginable.

However, for those that are very new to AdWords, this tool is going to seem very complicated and the results it provides will be hard to fully understand. Many new advertisers are going to be tempted to select an even bigger list of keyword suggestions and add them to their campaign without really doing any proper research on their value.

If you’re thinking that this is going to be good news for Google’s bank balance, then you’re probably right. They’ll probably make lots of extra cash from all the additional keywords these types of advertisers will select. But, maybe not so good for the advertiser who may not see a corresponding rise in sales.

But what is AdWords Quality Score, why is it important and how is it calculated?

What is AdWords Quality Score?

Google prides its self on providing users with relevant search results to queries. Quality Score is their way to ensure that only the most relevant AdWords ads appear to users.

Why Is Your AdWords Quality Score Important?

The reality is that AdWords calculates a Quality Score for a keyword every time it matches a search query. In general, the higher a keywords Quality Score the lower your bidding costs and the higher the position your ad will appear.

What this means to you is that the higher the Quality Score for your keywords, the less you pay in bids.

How Is AdWords Quality Score Calculated?

If you’re like most people, when you start using AdWords for the first time you might find the way your Quality Score is calculated and keeps changing very confusing.

What is actually happening is that when you create your brand new campaign, Google calculates a provisional Quality Score for each of your keywords based on how the keywords you choose have performed in the past when used by other advertisers and how relevant your ad is to those keywords.

The right thing to do therefore when setting up a new campaign is to divide your keywords into small ad groups of 10 or less closely related keywords. Each ad group should trigger at least one relevant ad that includes within it the most popular keyword in the ad group, ideally in the title and in the first line of the text.

The landing page of your ad should also point to the most closely related page of your web site for those keywords and not your home page.

As you continue advertising, after maybe a few days, the Google AdWords Bot will visit your web site and evaluate it. It’s worth remembering that the Bots evaluation is of your entire web site and not just the landing page for your ad.

Therefore your entire web site or at least a significant amount of the content on it needs to be on the general theme of the keywords you’ve selected.

Now, as your account starts to mature, so the Quality Score of your individual keywords will change based on their performance. If the ad your keywords trigger has a high click-through-rate then it’s likely that your Quality Score will rise, poor click-through-rate and it will probably fall.

What Is Google Actually Looking For?

The actual formula for calculating a keywords Quality Score is a closely guarded secret. However, we do know what Google looks at when making the calculation.

Your AdWords Quality Score is calculated differently depending on if you’re using Google and the search network or the content network.

For Google and the search network, factors used to calculate Quality Score include:)

+ The historical click-through-rate of your keyword and the ad it triggers.

+ The historical click-through-rate of your entire account. The historical click-through-rate of your domain.

+ The quality of your landing page.

+ The relevance of the keywords to the ads in your Adgroup.

+ Your accounts performance in the region you’re targeting.

+ The ads past performance on the target and similar sites.

+ The relevance of your ads and keywords in the ad group to the target site.

+ The quality of your landing page.

The best way to improve your keyword Quality Scores is by optimizing your account. This entails making sure that each of your ad groups contain descriptive ads all advertising the same product or service, and that each keyword in the ad group closely relates to the ads.

It’s important to track your conversions. But why?

Let’s say you’re running a campaign to increase the number of subscribers to your weight loss newsletter. You might be paying $20 per day and getting 100 new subscribers per day – but how do you know these subscribers are coming from AdWords?

By tracking your conversions you can see where the visitor came from and therefore which campaign is performing at its best.

You can also make your campaign more efficient by removing keywords that don’t convert well – thus reducing your costs.

So how do you track conversions in Google AdWords?

It’s really quite simple. All you need to do is setup conversion tracking in AdWords and then copy-and-paste some code into your website.

Let’s get started!

1) Login to your AdWords account

2) Select a campaign you want to setup conversions for

3) Under “Reporting” select “Conversions”

4) Select “+ New conversion”

5) Choose an action name e.g. “newsletter signup” and select a purpose for the conversion e.g. “signup”

6) Your security level for the page will probably be http unless you’re using a secure certificate (SSL)

7) Enter any revenue for the conversion. If it’s a newsletter signup it will probably be zero

You can also change the look of the tracking indicator. Under the terms of the AdWords conversion tracking you must tell the user of your website that you are tracking conversions

9) All you need to do now is copy-and-paste the code produced into the page on your website where the conversion is completed. Personally, I insert the code on the page where the user is taken to once they confirm their email address. That way I know their conversion is 100% complete.

There you go, that’s all there is to is! Now all the clicks that turn into conversions will be tracked on AdWords. This is especially useful for keywords effectiveness.

After a few days of running a campaign, view your keywords for the campaign and sort the keywords in order of clicks. Then look to see how many of those clicks turned into conversions. If there are some keywords that have high clicks but low or even zero conversions, remove them from your campaign. There just wasting you money!

When you have your Website up and running on the Content Network it is possibly time to start considering a stream of income known as AdSense.

The ads hitch Google allocates to your site relate to your content. You can understand, though, that Google won’t be interested until you are receiving 25 to 30 visits per day. For a site owner to qualify for the scheme his site has to be reasonably significant in its ranking.

One of the ideals of the Internet is that it provides value. If sites like MFA’s have no value they have nothing to offer. This raises the question about whether or not AdSense is a true business. Oh yes, it makes people lots of money, but what does it produce which has value?

Regard the AdSense scheme as an add-on. It presents an opportunity for income, it is easy to set up, Google encourages it and it almost runs on its own. But always beware of Google, they can change their arrangements at any time – and everyone feels the crunch. We can’t rely on AdSense as a stable business because of this so always use it as a second-stream income.

Similar skills required by affiliates apply to a site owner running AdSense. The main requirements being SEO, keywords and niche. The more traffic driven to the site the better and to reach real success the page requires high page rank awarded by the search engines. So really, we can’t get away from providing good, original content on sites which are fully optimized, are in the most appropriate niche and are using the best keywords!

No there isn’t. The official line is that there is no upper limit on the amount of Adsense sites you can own. But what does this say about Google? It does seem as if there is something a little suspicious about the way Google is operating.

In their ‘terms of service’ (TOS) they clearly state that publishers that use their ads must ensure that their material, to quote; ‘…does not breach and have not breached any duty towards or rights of any person or entity including, without limitation, rights of intellectual property… or rights or duties… under consumer protection’. In simple terms, you must ensure that you have the authority to use the material in your site or that the material contained within your site is your own.

Google also forbids the use of auto generated sites to display their ads.

But then why hasn’t Google put an upper limit to the amount of pages a single webmaster (or even a team) can own? Is it because Google is a business and like all businesses it wants to make as much money as possible?

What is the true underlying ethos of Google? We know that it is physically impossible (even for a team) to create thousands of original sites, full of rich informative content. The researching, planning, organization, development and creation take too much time. No publisher can create a thousand content rich sites by themselves.

We know this and so does Google. The only way that such a huge numbers of sites can be created is through automated means. Through automated website generation material can be siphoned off other sites to create content… without limit. The potential to create junk and make money of it is huge. And the opportunity has been too attractive to miss out on for some webmasters. But this method of creating sites is in clear breach of Google’s TOS. Obviously, no authorization can be sought for the siphoned content and none given for the creation of auto generated sites.

Yet Google haven’t put a cap on the number of sites a single publisher can use to display their ads. By not doing so, Google are inadvertently encouraging the use of these ‘black hat’ methods of using its service by failing to even suggest an upper limit. They are giving many publishers free rein to spam the search engines and pollute the websphere with constantly rehashed material. Damaging the core of Google itself; its search engine.

Google has, in the past taken strong action against publishers who continuously use automated methods to create their sites. But these actions seem futile, in light of the fact that Google themselves have taken no action to put a cap on the number of sites a publisher can use for Adsense.

There is the remote possibility that this loophole is deliberate and it exists so that it can be exploited by those webmasters that are willing to take the risk. This would mean that that there is a darker side to Google s business operations and if that’s the case then Google are playing a risky game. They have to carefully weigh up the short term financial gains of leaving their Adsense scheme open to exploitation against the long term damage it could cause to the stability of its search engine. The integrity of their search engine is crucial to the long term survival of Google. If Google wants to remain robust and competitive it has to tighten up its rules and do the sensible thing by putting a cap on the number of sites an individual can use to advertise their ads.
